M. Hopple & Co. Celebrates Silver Anniversary
M. Hopple & Co., Cincinnati's premier fine paper goods retailer, celebrates 25 years of creating special occassions this year. Founder and President Mary Hopple, who started the business after working for Marshall Field's in Chicago in their stationery buying office, credits her staff and her loyal customers for her company's tenacity and growth.
M. Hopple & Co. started with one small store on the Skywalk in the Westin Hotel Atrium in 1981. "As I look back," said Mary Hopple, "I can't imagine how we fit all our products into that tiny space!" In 1988, M. Hopple & Co. moved to a much larger store on the street level of the Atrium, where it remains today, and is undergoing a major renovation as part of the Fountain Square and Westin improvement project. A second store in Kenwood, located across from the Kenwood Towne Centre in the Jos. A. Bank Centre, opened in 1986. The stationer also sells a wide range of paper goods on its website, www.mhopple.com. "The website has been a fun and successful way to expand our customer database," according to Hopple, "and has allowed us to continue to service customers who have moved away or who find coming into our stores inconvenient."
Through the years, the company has seen many changes in the Cincinnati retail environment. "When we started business, L.S. Ayres and Elder Beerman had big downtown stores, Riverfront Stadium was just 10 years old and interest rates hovered around 18%," recalls Mary. The store struggled through the aftermath of the 2001 riots and the impact of 9/11, but Mary remains committed to the downtown retail scene.
M. Hopple & Co. is nationally recognized in the industry as a top seller of many fine paper lines, including Crane, William Arthur, Caspari and more recently, Vera Wang and Kate Spade. Over the years, the store has been selected to offer products not found at competitor's stores, because of M. Hopple & Co.'s track record and reputation for quality.
Mary and her staff pride themselves on offering personalized service. Their knowledge of etiquette, their understanding of trends in wedding, baby and other custom products, and their in-house graphic design service have helped the store to thrive over the years.
